Recent data from U-Haul’s 2025 Growth Index shows Utah remains among the U.S. states with more people moving in than moving out, continuing a multi-year trend of net inbound migration.
Utah’s Inbound Momentum
According to U-Haul’s annual tracking of one-way truck moves, Utah ranked 16th nationally in 2025 for net inbound moves, meaning more U-Haul customers ended their trips in Utah than left from here. That puts Utah in the top 20 for inbound migration for the fourth year running.
Communities across the state, including Salt Lake City, South Jordan, St. George, Lehi, Ogden, and Cedar City, all saw notable inbound U-Haul traffic, suggesting people are landing here from both nearby and farther-away states.
Why People Are Choosing Utah
Industry representatives point to a few key reasons behind Utah’s appeal:
• Job growth and business expansion: New corporate presences and expanding local industries bring job opportunities.
• Education and talent draw: Major universities, like the University of Utah, Utah State, and BYU, both attract students and create longer-term workforce growth.
• Outdoor lifestyle: Easy access to world-class recreation, skiing, hiking, national parks, lakes, trails, makes Utah especially appealing to active individuals and families.
The Bigger Picture
Nationally, migration patterns show that some states, especially in the Sun Belt and Mountain West, continue to attract new residents, while others see more people leaving than arriving. For example, Texas, Florida, and the Carolinas rank as the top inbound states in U-Haul’s 2025 data, while California experienced the largest net loss of movers.
This doesn’t just affect population count, it shapes how local housing markets, schools, and communities grow. For real estate, inbound migration often signals sustained demand for homes and rentals in areas that attract movers.
